Concrete Light sculpture
Hand-sculpted blackened concrete, blackened steel, blown glass, and light. 27" diameter.
Time and temperature are fundamental to the production of quality concrete and in this case it's quite time sensitive as the concrete is tempered with additives to prevent separation and promote a thicker consistency similar to clay. This formula drastically decreases the time in which the concrete is malleable so the larger the pieces the less working time.
I have been forever influenced by the textures found throughout nature but have had difficulties tying them into my work, specifically in concrete.
Creating molds for concrete is a costly process both in materials and in time, so I set out to devise a technique based on the premise of free-hand sculpting rather than meticulous preparation for reproduction, these pieces are impulsive and truly one of a kind.
